Hi! I hope this page and the rest of our site answers any questions you might have about the art program. Feel free to contact me, however, if you need more information or help of some kind. I welcome mail from my students and their families.

The following information is from previous years and previous teachers.

Learn to fold this little lucky bat (and learn why he is called lucky) on a new how-to page!

Many photos and QuickTime movies show you how. I made it for people who know nothing about origami. My students will recognize a lot of the tricks.

Explore bats in art from around the world and the bats of Connecticut in a few more pages that go along with the origami.

If you like origami, be sure to check out the How To Index for more.

Another new how-to is a Flash movie site showing how to make the samurai helmet, a fish and a turtle. Then there is a new page contributed by a person from Israel who saw our site on the web...a shirt with attached pants...diagramed by Nadav Vaks

Want to know what your art teacher does on some of those Staff Development days?
GO HERE!

It was corn printing time in first grade this fall. After painting a fresh ear of corn the kids rolled it on a paper. This paper was cut up and used the next week to make a collage of Indian corn.

To see photos of this process click on the corn!

There were Chicken Art Days at Nathan Hale! The art room hosted Millicent and her brood of seven chicks. The chicks celebrated their "one week birthday" that Friday. Millicent is a Rhode Island Red hen belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Weimann, neighbors of Mrs. Craib. They kindly lend Millicent to us so kids can see the chicks up close and learn about birds. The 1st and 2nd grades drew the chickens, while the 3rd grade learned a chicken origami!

Want to see some movies of the chickens!???? Go here!

New...Mrs. Craib is making jigsaw puzzles. Go to the Jigsaw Puzzle Index page and try one. They take a moment to load so don't give up if nothing seems to be on the page for a minute!

At Nathan Hale we are fortunate to have a team of kindergarten teachers who regularly introduce the kids to classic works from various cultures.

To see one project CLICK HERE!

You will see the original print the children were responding to as well as many of their paintings.

Visit The Gallery, a collection of projects from over the years. The first one is 1998....was it someone's in your family?!!!

This our art room. Nathan Hale has one of the best art rooms in Manchester!

Above you have seen the row of three sinks at a lower level that all kids can reach. They were put in a couple years ago and I still thank my lucky stars evry week as I wipe them down and make them look good.

The gear project, by the way, is a VERY popular past time with children who have a moment to contemplate the movements.

It takes a good spatial awareness to predict what is going to happen with a gear when you place it. Based on the intense interest I have seen in the classroom I would recommend this type toy to any parent for their child. (Even older kids compete for time on the gear set. I like to play with it, too!)

Do you like origami? I have a collection of 1960s origami books that I am scanning because the illustrations are so charming. Real folded models are tipped (glued) onto the page with a background print. I have more to scan, including one on pop-up origami!

Below is a selection of origami books in our classroom.
